As you are reading Paradise Lost, what are your thoughts so far? Are you having trouble with the language or are you understanding it? What are your initial reactions to Satan’s speeches? What are you seeing from our background notes reflected in the readings?
Wow….I’m late on this. I don’t log onto tumblr much. Anyways, I shall answer these questions now. My first thoughts on Paradise Lost, what the heck am I reading? I feel the language that John Milton uses in the epic…well, I wouldn’t want to say its too difficult or too simple. I would have to say his language is difficult, but understandable, only if read more than once because I had to reread lines. As for my reactions toward Satan’s speeches, Satan is not entirely bad, in my point of view. I’ve never read the bible or been very religious, but while reading Paradise Lost, I start to understand Satan’s motive for going against God. Despite God being the “good one” there are some things mentioned by Satan that I agree. But then again, Satan might not be the most trustworthy person in the poem. While reading, I’ve noticed some of our background notes on angels and sins are reflected on the readings, such as the mentioning of the cherub and the seraphic.
Three more to follow, ontop of Lloyd’s posted a little bit ago.
